Announcing: Gordon Square Arts District Ensemble-in-Residence!

When applications opened in late summer for a Musician-in-Residence in the Gordon Square Arts District, I knew I needed to focus the application on the work I do with Classical Revolution Cleveland. For the last nine years we’ve been in the neighborhood, month after month, offering free classical music at The Happy Dog. At first I thought, “they aren’t going to want MORE of what we do – we are already here so much!” But I went for it anyway, and CRC colleagues and I cooked up some pretty neat ideas we ended up including in our application. And, poof! We are beyond honored to have been chosen as the first Musician-in-Residence, but really, you could just call us an Ensemble-In-Residence.

As most people know, Classical Rev CLE is NOT a 501c3 (or anything else officially incorporated). We don’t have guaranteed sources for funding and are paid as individuals for anything outside of our bar shows, which are fueled exclusively with beer and hotdogs (yum). I’m not sure when the right time will be to take the next step, but the reality of a generous stipend + project costs via this residency is THRILLING – we have automatic resources to program performances we wouldn’t normally create otherwise… even as full-time independent professionals.

Wanna see the lineup??

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30: Soundscape in the W. 65th Tunnel (4pm)

This was an immersive performance with listeners and passersby experiencing the combination of free-form improvisation of a string quintet and the unique acoustic properties of a pedestrian tunnel. As listeners passed through the tunnel, different instruments featured prominently, which constantly altered the listening experience. It literally created a #soundscape.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14: Family Concert in the Near West Theatre Cafe Area (1pm).

This one-hour program features instruments from the string, woodwind, and percussion families and is designed for families with young children. Sing-a-longs, instrument demos, and a meet-the-musicians segment gives young children the opportunity to experience classical music up close!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16: Monthly appearance at The Happy Dog (8-10pm)

If you haven’t ever made it to one of our monthly musical romps at The Happy Dog, consider coming out! It’s always free, bar staff are fabulous, and the food and drinks are always worth it.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19: JOIN concert at HP Gas Station during Project Red Cord. (7:30pm)

Our JOIN concerts focus on underserved and nontraditional audiences. (See previous blog posts about past JOIN performances). The Renee Jones Empowerment Center organizes monthly events on Lorain Ave. which serve victims of human trafficking with a variety of social and emotional services. We will set up for a 45 minute concert during this event inside the HP Gas station at the corner of Lorain and W. 73rd. We’ve performed in lots of places, but this will be a first!
